NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's soccer team will make a short trip to FDU for a Garden State match-up on Sunday at 12Noon inside University Stadium in Teaneck, NJ.
Last Time Out
Loyola (MD) scored a goal in each half to secure a 2-0 shutout against visiting NJIT Thursday evening in men's soccer action at Ridley Athletic Complex in the 2025 season opener for both teams.
The Highlanders (0-1) fired off nine shots with four shots on goal in 90 minutes. Sophomore Diogo Rebelo led NJIT with three shots followed by Cristian LoGrasso and Caio Carrara with two shots each.
NJIT goalkeeper Devin Armstrong played the full 90 minutes and recorded four saves.

FDU leads the all-time series, 6-2-1. The Highlanders won the last meeting in 2021 in Newark, 4-1, on August 26, 2021.
News & Notes
–Head coach Fernando Barboto begins his 10th season at NJIT after guiding the 2024 Highlanders to its fifth straight America East Tournament appearance.
–The Highlanders have welcomed 10 newcomers to the 2025 roster.
–America East All-Championship team selection Sergio Martinez Cubel returns as the Highlanders top goal scorer. Three out of four goals in 2024 came on penalty kicks, all three being successful.
–Devin Armstrong, the Highlander keeper, played and started in 17 matches last season after transferring in from Wake Forest (2022-23) and Akron (January 2024), combining for a 6-7-4 overall mark, 60 saves, a 1.51 goals against average and a pair of shutouts. He posted a personal-best nine saves at Vermont. Armstrong ranked fourth in the league in saves per game (3.53).
–Alvaro Heredia combined for a pair of goals and assists for six points.
–NJIT was voted to finish fifth in the 2025 America East Preseason Coaches Poll.
FDU Notes
–In 2024, the Knights finished with a 10-4-5 record, including a 5-2-1 record in conference play. The Knights reached the 2024 NEC Championship, where they ultimately fell to the champions in LIU.
–Head coach Jaymee Highcock enters his second season at the helm, and will look to build off of an impressive first year in Teaneck.
–FDU will return 14 members of the 2024 squad as they look to finish the job in 2025. The squad featured 2024 All-NEC First Team member NK Tima, as well as 2024 All-NEC Second Team member Matt Giraldo.
–The Knights are coming off a 1-1 draw against America East opponent UAlbany on August 21.
–Following halftime, the Knights finally broke the scoreless tie, and got on the board for the first time in 2025. In the 63rd minute, sophomore Luke Ayaz made a skillful tackle at midfield to win possession for the Knights. On the ensuing fast break, Matt Giraldo was able to send the ball back to Ayaz over the middle, who buried a goal to give FDU a 1-0 lead. Ayaz' goal was the first of his collegiate career.
–Andrew Araya played his freshman campaign for the Highlanders, earning America East All-Rookie honors

The Highlanders will begin a stretch of four straight in Newark with the home opener set against UConn (Aug. 28), who the Highlanders will face for the third time in program history. The match is slated for 7pm on ESPN+.
