The Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center stands as the centerpiece of NJIT Athletics and campus recreation, ushering in a new era for the university when it officially opened in November 2017.
The state-of-the-art, three-story, 220,000-square-foot facility serves as the home of NJIT’s Division I athletic programs while also functioning as a dynamic destination for wellness, recreation, academics, campus events, and community engagement.
Strategically located at the corner of Lock and Warren Streets, the Wellness and Events Center serves as a gateway to campus and reflects NJIT’s commitment to innovation, technology, and student success. Designed by AECOM and constructed by Torcon, the facility blends modern architectural design with flexible functionality, highlighted by its iconic 52-foot-high glass façade overlooking Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium and the NJIT campus.
At the heart of the facility is the 3,500-seat arena, home to NJIT men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. Designed as a fully transformable venue, the arena can quickly adapt to a wide range of events. With the lower bowl seating fully extended, the space provides an electric Division I game-day atmosphere. Retractable seating and portable staging allow the venue to seamlessly convert into a convocation hall, concert venue, career fair space, trade show floor, or large-scale campus event center.
The Wellness and Events Center was built to support the holistic development of NJIT student-athletes. Dedicated spaces for Division I programs include modern locker rooms, team meeting areas, coaches’ offices, academic support spaces, a strength and conditioning center, athletic training facilities, and hydrotherapy recovery pools. The building also features an ESPN production room and media facilities to support live broadcasts and championship-level event coverage.
Among the facility’s premier athletic and recreation amenities are:
- A 25-yard, eight-lane swimming and diving pool with spectator seating
- A 5,700-square-foot fitness center featuring cardio equipment, weight stations, and strength-training areas
- An 11,580-square-foot indoor turf training space
- Two full-length practice courts for intercollegiate athletics, recreation, and intramurals
- Two racquetball courts and dedicated group exercise studios
- Athletic training and rehabilitation facilities featuring three hydrotherapy pools
- A main concourse indoor running track
- Multipurpose rooms for yoga, aerobics, Pilates, fencing, student activities, and campus programming
The WEC was designed not only as an athletics facility, but also as a vibrant campus hub. A wide interior promenade connects the NJIT campus quadrangle to Newark’s light rail transit station, creating a highly active pedestrian corridor filled with natural light, seating areas, and gathering spaces for students, faculty, alumni, and visitors. Outdoor grandstand seating and open social areas further enhance the facility’s role as a central meeting point on campus.
The venue’s advanced event infrastructure also supports professional conferences, career fairs, alumni events, esports activations, concerts, and university ceremonies, making it one of the most versatile event spaces in the region.
From elite Division I competition to wellness programming and campus life, the Wellness and Events Center embodies NJIT’s vision for innovation, student engagement, and athletic excellence — providing Highlander student-athletes and the university community with a world-class home for competition, recreation, and connection.
