NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's soccer team will continue its stretch at home on Tuesday evening, hosting La Salle.

The attendance (1,028 fans) for the NJIT-UConn men's soccer match on August 28, 2025 was the most fans at a home soccer event.

All-Time Series
NJIT leads the all-time series matchup 3-2-1 with the Highlanders picking up wins in the last three meetings. The Highlanders and Explorers will play for the seventh straight season which dates back to the 2018 season (the teams did not meet in COVID 2020).

Last Time Out
Senior Sergio Martinez Cubel's goal in the first half led the NJIT men's soccer team to its first win of the 2025 season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Rider in men's soccer non-conference action inside Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

Senior goalkeeper Devin Armstrong registered his second consecutive shutout of the season, stopping three Bronc shots while in a 0-0 tie against UConn in the Highlanders home opener, the Highlander keeper combined for four saves.  

NJIT scored its lone goal of the match on a ninth minute tally on a goal by Martinez Cubel.  Martinez Cubel's initial shot was saved by Rider keeper but Martinez Cubel's second shot on target was deflected off a Broncs' defender and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.  The goal was the seventh career tally for the midfielder from Sedavi, Spain. 

News & Notes
–NJIT picked up its first win in 2025 on Sept. 6 in a 1-0 home victory over Rider.  Sergio Martinez Cubel scored the lone goal and goalkeeper Devin Armstrong combined for the clean sheet.
–The Highlanders started out the season dropping its first two games – at Loyola (MD) and at FDU but picked up a 0-0 draw against UConn on August 28 in front of a sellout crowd.
–Head coach Fernando Barboto begins his 10th season at NJIT after guiding the 2024 Highlanders to its fifth straight America East Tournament appearance.
–The Highlanders have welcomed 10 newcomers to the 2025 roster.
–America East All-Championship team selection Sergio Martinez Cubel returns as the Highlanders top goal scorer. Three out of four goals in 2024 came on penalty kicks, all three being successful.
Devin Armstrong, the Highlander keeper, played and started in 17 matches last season after transferring in from Wake Forest (2022-23) and Akron (January 2024), combining for a 6-7-4 overall mark, 60 saves, a 1.51 goals against average and a pair of shutouts.  He posted a personal-best nine saves at Vermont.  Armstrong ranked fourth in the league in saves per game (3.53).
Alvaro Heredia combined for a pair of goals and assists for six points.
–NJIT was voted to finish fifth in the 2025 America East Preseason Coaches Poll.

Scouting the Explorers
–La Salle enters Tuesday's contest in search of its first win in 2025.
–The Explorers are 0-1-3 with the three ties coming against Lehigh, Rider and Mount St. Mary's.  The lone loss was against #16 West Virginia.
–The Explorers feature four returning goal scorers in Steven Arias, Drew Blackwell, Sean Yurgel, and Alex Zama. Daniel Smith leads the returners after making 16 starts a season ago. He returns alongside fellow senior Michael China, who appeared in all 18 games, starting 15. Between the sticks, Tino Kneis returns for his final campaign after an outstanding 2024. He posted a GAA of 0.86, a La Salle program record (minimum started 50% of games).
–La Salle adds 10 newcomers to the roster from eight countries. 
--Last season, La Salle combined for a 6-8-4 overall mark, 3-3-2 in the Atlantic 10, appearing in the first round of the A10 playoffs.

Up Next
The Highlanders will conclude its three-match homestand on Saturday at 6pm against Saint Peter's as part of a doubleheader with the NJIT women's soccer who will kickoff against North Texas at 1pm. Both matches will be broadcast on America East TV.
