NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams combined for seven wins in the inaugural meet inside the new Wellness and Events Center on Sunday.
The NJIT men extended its win streak to 17 matches, hosting the MACFA B vs. C Invitational, registering wins over William & Mary (24-3), Navy (26-1), John Hopkins (17-10) and Lafayette (17-10).
The women hosted the NJIT Invitational in conjunction with the men, snapping a 13-match losing streak, posting three wins against William & Mary (19-8), Army (19-8) and Navy (22-5).
The Highlander men went 32-4 on the epee strip. Top performers for NJIT were:
Gal Gluhic (8-0,)
Ege Ayan (10-1) and
Eduardo Ezcurra (9-1)
In men's foil, the team combined for a 29-7 overall mark, led by freshman
Thomas Manley, who posted a 9-0 record.
Simon Rizell and
Nicholas Concepcion each added 5-1 records and
Chris Saulys went 4-1.
On the saber strip, the Highlanders went 23-14 paced by junior
Greg Puccio, who went undefeated with a 6-0 record.
On the women's side, both the foil and epee squads combined for a 23-4 mark.
On the foil strip,
Cristina Garcia Mendicino and
Annalena Shigihara each posted 8-1 records. In women's epee,
Maria Sztan and
Christy Hernandez went 6-0 while
Julia Garcia notched a 5-1 record.
In women's saber,
Amanda Soliman went undefeated going 9-0.
The NJIT men will return to action on March 3 at the MACFA Championships in Easton, PA, hosted by Lafayette. The NJIT women will compete at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational on February 25.
