PHILADELPHILA – NJIT fell 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 16-25) to host La Salle on Saturday in the final match of the La Salle Invitational.
The Highlanders finished 2-2 at the La Salle Tournament with victories over Saint Francis U and Morgan State on Friday while dropping both matches to Quinnipiac and host La Salle on Saturday.
NJIT was led by
Weronika Wiezik who tallied 10 kills and eight digs.
Tess Albyn recorded eight kills and two blocks while
Katarzyna Klocek added seven kills and six digs. Freshman setter
Liz Benson posted 21 assists for the Highlanders.
The Explorers were led by Bryanna Davis who combined for a game-high 12 kills and two digs and Ashley Felton who had five kills and five blocks. Catherine Edgington added eight kills for La Salle. K. Wood collected a game-high 27 assists and J. Sharrits made a game-high 22 digs.
In the first set, junior Albyn hit 1.000 with a team leading five kills for the Highlanders. NJIT kept it close in the set, but the Explorers went on a 5-0 run to secure their 25-19 win.
In the second set NJIT, down 10-16, went on a 3-0 run with two errors against La Salle and a serving ace by senior middle
Anneka Harris. The Highlanders came within one, 16-17, with two kills by Wiezik but the Explorers pulled away to a 25-21 victory.
The Highlanders came out strong in the third set, holding a 6-4 lead, before two big kills by Davis for a 6-6- tie. La Salle scored seven consecutive point and kept the lead, securing a 25-16 win and sweeping the Highlanders, 3-0.
NJIT will compete in the Terrier/Fordham Invitational on September 2-3, facing Quinnipiac, for the second time this season, on Friday and Fordham and St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday.
