Visiting Marist Takes 3-1 Decision from NJIT in Non-Conference Action


NEWARK, NJ—Marist had three players reach double-digit kill totals paced by sophomore Mackenzie O'Brien with a match-best 14 kills, as the visiting Red Foxes took a 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-16) decision from NJIT Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Fleisher Athletic Center.

Marist, which dropped its previous three matches, got back into the win column Sunday, improving to 8-14 overall while the Highlanders, who snapped a nine-match skid and recorded its first ASUN Conference victory on Saturday against USC Upstate, drops to 9-17 on the season after Sunday's result.

In addition to O'Brien's match-best 14 kills, junior outside hitter Kelsey Ediger combined for 12 kills on 28 attempts with just one error followed by freshman middle Megan Fergus with 11.  Ediger finished the match with a .393 hitting percentage.

Marist senior setter Amanda Schlegel recorded a team-best 26 assists while teammate Taylor VanDerBiezen notched a double-double with 17 assists and 14 digs in the win.

The Red Foxes were led defensively by Lexi Millington with a match-high 23 digs followed by VanDerBiezen (14) and Ediger (9).

Sophomore defensive specialist Melanie Snyder paced the match with three service aces, as the visiting Red Foxes held a 7-4 advantage in that category.  Four different Highlanders recorded one ace.

Junior middle blocker Ashton Korona was the match-leader with four total blocks (all assists) for Marist.

NJIT's senior Weronika Wiezik and Tess Albyn were the team leaders in the kills' category, notching 10 apiece.  Wiezik recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.  Senior Katarzyna Klocek and Mikalah Hughes added eight kills each.

Freshman setter Liz Benson recorded her second straight double-double of the season and sixth overall this season with a match-high 34 assists while adding 12 digs and three block assists.

Sophomore libero Adriana Nieto notched her fifth straight match with double-digit dig totals, combining for a team-best 18.  Freshman defensive specialist Olivia Welsch added eight digs for the Highlanders.

In the first frame, the Highlanders jumped out to an early 11-7 advantage.  The visiting Red Foxes rallied back in the mid-teens, sparked by a 7-1 run to pull ahead 16-15 on a service ace by Ediger.  The set saw three more ties, the final at 20 on a kill by Marist's O'Brien but the Highlanders used a 5-1 spurt to close out the set, 25-21.

Marist combined to hit an impressive .458 in the second frame with 14 kills on 24 attempts with just three errors.  The Red Foxes scored the opening four points and never looked back, taking a 25-18 victory, knotting the match at 1-1.

In the third set, which saw 11 ties and three lead changes, was play close throughout.  Marist held a 19-14 advantage after a Highlander attacking error but the home team went on a 7-2 run, knotting the frame at 21 on a kill by Klocek.  After two more ties, the final at 24 after a kill by NJIT's Albyn, Marist scored the final two points of the set to go on to win, 26-24, and go up 2-1.

The visiting Red Foxes started out on fire in the fourth frame, 6-2, and later pushed its lead to 16-10, closing out the set with a 25-16 win, to clinch the match, 3-1.

NJIT, in a stretch of four matches at home, will host ASUN Conference opponent Kennesaw State on October 28 at 7pm and wrap-up the weekend against Lipscomb on October 30 against Lipscomb at 1pm.

In the first meeting of the season, both Kennesaw State and Lipscomb blanked the Highlanders, 3-0.
