DELAND, FL – NJIT women's volleyball lost its final match of the season at Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Stetson 3-0 (15-25, 18-25, 19-25) on Sunday.
The Hatters improve to a 10-17 overall record and a 4-9 conference record and will face No. 3 seed Kennesaw State in the first round of the A-Sun championships.
The Highlanders finish with a 6-25 overall record, including 1-13 in the A-Sun. The team's 3-2 victory over Stetson in Newark on October 4, was the first win in A-Sun conference play for any team from NJIT, which began conference competition for the first time in 2015-16.
NJIT was once again led by senior
Danica Vukotic, who recorded 10 kills and five digs. Freshman
Adriana Nieto led the match in digs with 14 and sophomore
Alyssa Armada tallied 17 assists for the Highlanders.
Stetson freshman Anna Bezhan logged a game-high 14 kills, while junior Madison Akins added 11 of her own. Seniors Kayla Weller accumulated a match-high 34 assists and Alexa Drost had 13 digs on defense.
The Hatters took a quick 4-0 lead to open, started by a kill from Bezhan. The Highlanders were unable to rally back and lost the set 15-25.
The second set started the same way, but NJIT showed signs of a comeback, putting itself within three points 14-17, with kills from sophomore
Tess Albyn and senior
Nina Vukotic and a serving ace from
Danica Vukotic. Stetson went on to win the second set 25-18.
The most even-played set was the third, but the Hatters stayed on top 25-19 to clinch the match
NJIT will graduate seniors
Danica Vukotic,
Nina Vukotic,
Katherine Gerton and
Grace Gao. Twin sisters Danica and Nina have led the Highlanders in kills, Danica with 381 and Nina with 261. Danica also ranks in the top five of the A-Sun kills list. Gerton appeared in 19 matches for the Highlanders in her career and Gao in 17.
