EDINBURG, TX – The NJIT women's volleyball team recorded its tenth win of the season with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13) victory over Texas-Pan American, in women's volleyball Great West Conference action Thursday evening at the UTPA Field House.
The Highlanders (10-15, 3-5 GWC), who have won their last three matches were paced by juniors
Janet Snell and
Renata Pandolfo, sharing match-high honors with Texas-Pan American's Diara Reynolds with 15 kills apiece. NJIT's win streak started with the Highlanders defeating Lafayette 3-0 on October 25 and then sweeping Saint Peter's 3-0 on October 27.
Middle
Julia Colombo combined for nine kills while
Cathy Leung added eight. Colombo finished the night with (9k, 1e, 19 a) for a .420 hitting percentage and also notched six digs.
Pandolfo finished with a double-double – 15 kills to go along with 13 digs. The digs leader for the match was NJIT senior libero
Audrey Snell who dug-up 36 digs, a new personal-best. This season Snell's season-best was 29 digs vs. Lehigh on September 6; last season she compiled 29 digs vs. South Dakota on October 23.
Following Snell's match-high 36 digs was Pandolfo (13) and setter
Anna Mercado (10) who also registered a double-double piling up a match-high 43 assists. Leung was the Highlanders leader with four total blocks (1 solo, 3 assists) in front of the net followed by
Gretchen VonKoenig with three block assists.
Following Texas-Pan American's (7-21, 1-7 GWC) Reynold's 15 kills were Maria Kliefoth (9), Ijanae Holman (8) and Sarah Davis (8). Kliefoth hit .500 for the match (9k, 1e, 16a) and Holman finished with a .333 hitting percentage (8k, 1e, 21a) for the home team.
The Broncs used two setters – Shauna Miller, who played four sets and Macey Singleton, who played all five sets. Miller posted 36 assists followed by Singleton's double-double 15 assists and 13 digs.
Defensively, Texas-Pan American was led by Juri Franzen with a team-high 28 digs and match-high five service aces. Ashten Landry and Reynolds notched eight digs apiece for the Broncs.
Davis combined for four block assists for a match-high as Reynolds and Krysta Freitas posted two block assists apiece.
The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday at Houston Baptist for a 2pm (CT) scheduled conference match.
In the last meeting between the teams in Newark, Houston Baptist defeated the Highlanders, 3-1.
