Robert Willmott returns to the NJIT track and field coaching staff in 2018-19 after three years competing in Seattle, Washington as a Masters Thrower in the hammer throw, 35lb weight and 56lb super weight.
Willmott, the 2018 USA Track and Field National Champion in the 35lb outdoor weight, is no stranger to the Highlanders coaching staff. Willmott volunteered in the spring of 2014, guiding the Highlanders to capture the CTC Conference Outdoor Championship.
During his seven-year stint at Stevens (2006-13), Willmott coached a Division III All-American (Alina Duran), three NCAA Division II National Qualifiers, numerous ECAC Division III Qualifiers and coached 28 Empire 8 Conference Champions. Duran, who won the 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships and also coached Maggie Kowalska in 2009-10 to the NCAA championships in the javelin – becoming the first Stevens freshman and thrower to ever qualify for nationals.Â
In 2012-13, the Stevens men broke numerous school records in the shot put, discus, javelin and weight throw while the women's team set the school record in weight throw, hammer and javelin.
A walk-on at Emporia State University in Kansas in 1994, Willmott placed in the top 8 at the NAIA Conference Championships throughout his career, in the hammer and 35lb weight from 1995-99.
He earned a bachelor of interdisciplinary studies degree in December 2013 from Emporia State University in Emporia Kansas with an emphasis in physics, chemistry and history.
Willmott holds a USATF level I coaching certification.
