Long Road Trip Set for Women’s Basketball; Travels to Maine, New Hampshire This Week

NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT women's basketball team will make its first long America East Conference trip of the season, beginning at Maine on January 16 and wrapping up the road swing at New Hampshire on January 18.

Game Information 
At Maine … Thursday's matchup is set to tip off at 6pm inside Memorial Gymnasium on ESPN+ with in-game statistics available on GoBlackBears.com.

At New Hampshire … Saturday's matchup is set to tip off at 6pm inside Lundholm Gymnasium on ESPN+ with in-game statistics available on UNHWildcats.com.

All-Time Series
NJIT-Maine: Maine leads the all-time series, 9-4.  The first meeting between the two teams dates back to 2008.  The Black Bears have won the last two meetings between the two teams.

NJIT-UNH: UNH leads the all-time series, 7-5.  NJIT won the last meeting between the two teams, 64-52, on February 22.

Last Time Out
Rising junior Alejandra Zuniga scored a game-best 29 points leading the Highlanders to a 72-54 home victory over visiting UMass Lowell in America East Conference women's basketball action inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center Saturday afternoon. 

Streaking Highlanders
NJIT has won four straight games and remains perfect in the America East for the first time since the 2021-22 season.

The Highlanders streak began on Dec. 30 with a win over LIU, followed up by three straight wins in conference over Binghamton, UMBC and most recently UMass Lowell.

The last time NJIT won five straight dates back to 2021-22.

5X America East Rookie of the Week - Olivia Kulyk
Freshman Olivia Kulyk has been selected America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season, the conference office announced on Monday.

In a 2-0 week for the Highlanders, Kulyk averaged 13.0pppg, 5.0rpg, 1.0bpg while shooting 50% from the field.

Kulyk scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range in addition to two assists in the Highlanders 83-55 road victory.

In the Highlanders home win over UMass Lowell, Kulyk scored 13 points, five rebounds, shooting 3-for-6 from three=point range to go along with two blocks.

Kulyk has been selected America East Rookie of the Week five times and Player of the Week once.

    1. Averaged 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game in a 2-0 week.

    2. Had 21 pts, 6 assists, 5 steals & 4 rebounds in a 69-59 win over Maine.

    3. Helped team to first 3-1 start in conference play since 2016-17 season.

1,000 Career Points and Counting
Rising junior Alejandra Zuniga became the 13th Highlander to score 1,000 career points after a tough driving right-handed layup with 2:38 left in the game against Monmouth on December 9, 2024.  Zuniga, who cracked the top-10 all-time stands at 1,083 points, which ranks nine all-time in program history.

Highlander Highlights 

  • The Highlanders remain undefeated in America East Conference action with three early wins.

  • NJIT has won four in a row (at LIU, 12/30/24), (vs. Binghamton, 1/2/25) on the road at UMBC (1/9/25) and at home against (UMass Lowell; 1/11/25).   The last time NJIT won four straight dates back to 2021-22 when the Highlanders won a stretch of five straight.

  • The Highlanders closed out 2024 with a win over LIU, 89-60, led by five players reaching double-figures.

  • NJIT concluded its non-conference slate 3-10, dropping six games by five or less points this season, including a one-point overtime loss Hostra (L, 69-74), Army West Point (L, 68-69 (OT)), Lafayette (L, 69-71), Saint Peter's (L, 60-65), Coppin State (L, 61-63) and Wagner (W, 62-60).

  • The Highlanders secured its first win of the season at Saint Francis U, an 80-60 road victory.  The 80 points are the most scored by the Highlanders this season.

  • Alejandra Zuniga is averaging 17.8ppg and 2.8rpg while shooting 45.7% from the field.  She has scored 20+ points or more in seven games this season, including a season-best 26 at Rutgers.  Zuniga ranks first in the conference in scoring and third in assists.

  • Zuniga became the 13th Highlander to score 1,000 career points after a tough driving right-handed layup with 2:38 left in the game against Monmouth on December 9, 2024.  Zuniga stands with 1,054 points which ranks 11th in program history.

  • Freshman Olivia Kulyk has been named America East Rookie of the Week five times and Player of the Week once this season. She is averaging 11.5ppg and 4.8rpg. In the America East, Kulyk ranks in the top nine in scoring (11.5), tops the league in three-point field goal percentage (42.1) and three-point field goals made (2.4).

  • After missing the month of December due to injury, the Highlanders welcomed back senior forward Trinity Williams against Binghamton.  Williams finished the game with eight points, four rebounds on 4-of-5 from the field in 23 minutes.  Williams followed up with a 21-point, six rebound and two blocks performance at UMBC in NJIT's first road victory in league action.

  • As a team, NJIT ranks first in the America East in scoring (69.3 ppg), blocked shots (4.25 bpg) and second in three-point field goals made (8.5 pg).

  • Head Coach Mike Lane is in his seventh season at the helm of the Highlanders.  NJIT went 12-18 overall, 4-12 in the America East and advanced to the America East Postseason Tournament for the fourth straight time.

Scouting Maine
Maine enters Thursday's contest with a 7-10 overall mark, 2-2 in the America East.  The Black Bears have lost its last two against Binghamton and most recently UAlbany, who sits atop of the league with a 4-0 mark.

Leading the way for the Black Bears is Caroline Bornemann with 11.4ppg and 7.6rpg while shooting 42.6 percent from the field.  She ranks eighth in the America East in scoring and second in rebounding.

Scouting New Hampshire
New Hampshire will host UMBC on January 16 before welcoming NJIT on Saturday, January 18.  The Wildcats are 6-11 overall and still in search of its first America East victory.

The Wildcats have dropped its last four contests and last won against Stonehill on December 30.

Eva DeChent leads the way for New Hampshire, averaging 16.5ppg while Clara Gomez tops the team on the boards averaging 7.1rpg.  DeChent ranks third in the conference in scoring while Gomez sits in fourth in the conference in the rebounding category.

After the two-game road swing, NJIT will return to Newark and welcome Vermont on January 23 and UAlbany on January 25.
