Women's Soccer Defeated At California Baptist

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The NJIT women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season in a 3-1 loss to the California Baptist Lancers Thursday evening at CBU Soccer Stadium. The loss moved NJIT's record to 1-1-1 while CBU improved to 2-0.

Given Thursday's matchup was the first meeting between the two teams - and NJIT's first-ever game in California - it was expected that the early parts of the game would be spent in a feeling out process. However, CBU would produce their first chance around the seventh minute and start a run of challenges to test the NJIT defense. Junior starting goalkeeper Samantha Constantine, who did not have to register a save in the Highlanders' opening two games, came out ready and made two stops within the first 16 minutes.

The third time Constantine saw a shot on goal would not be the charm for NJIT as CBU took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute and recorded the first goal scored against NJIT in 2023.

CBU would add goals in the 59th and 66th minutes to extend their lead to 3-0. The second goal initially looked like a successful goal line clearance by Taylor Pape but after review, it was ruled that CBU's cross into the box deflected off of Pape and went over the line before her attempt to clear it. The third goal came on a CBU set piece from the right side that Constantine got a hand on but couldn't keep out of the goal.

NJIT would not go down without a fight, quickly pulling one back in the 69th minute. Aleesha Deshmukh controlled a loose ball at midfield with a header to Madison Taibl and Taibl sent a perfect pass from the NJIT defensive third into the opposite 18-yard box as a sprinting Briana Andreoli curled a first touch shot from the right of goal inside the left far post.

OTHER NOTES
  • Andreoli - NJIT's goals co-leader from 2022 along with Bailey Chant - netted the fourth goal of her young career.
  • Conversely, Deshmukh now has four career assists after helping out on Andreoli's score.
  • After the last two games, Taibl has recorded a goal and an assist during a season for the first time in her career.
  • Constantine ended the night with five saves, tied for the third-most she's posted in a game in her career, and also played her first full 90 minutes of the season.
  • 2022 America East All-Championship selection Ciara Adams made her season debut in Thursday's contest and was able to play 73 minutes.
  • With its lone goal, NJIT avoided suffering a shutout defeat for the sixth straight regular season game - seventh game overall including last year's AE quarterfinal - dating back to its last such setback on October 13, 2022 (1-0 loss vs UMBC).
