Women's Tennis Loses Closely Contested Spring Break Finale Against Southeastern Louisiana

HAMMOND, LA. — The NJIT women's tennis team concluded its Spring Break trip to Louisiana with a second straight narrow defeat, falling 4-3 to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions despite once again playing without its full roster.

NJIT (6-6) started out with a 1-0 advantage after its top two doubles squads - Shivani Ingle & Irene Cocero at No. 1 and Sandra Dzhambazov & Laura Wipfli at No. 2 - picked up 6-4 and 6-2 victories in their respective matches.

Without a player to slot into No. 6 singles, the match moved to a 1-1 tie. Paula Menendez Alvarez finished the week with a 3-0 singles record after winning at No. 5 and putting the Highlanders ahead 2-1 but an SLU win at No. 2 evened the score again at 2-2.

SLU took its first lead of the match after earning a three-set win at No. 4 before Shalom Salvi knotted the contest once more at 3-3 after a three-setter of her own at No. 3, leaving the match to be decided by the top singles flight.

Dzhambazov and SLU's Putri Insani split their first two sets by way of hard-fought 7-6 tiebreakers but Insani would edge out Dzhambazov and give SLU the victory with a 6-0 win in the third set. 

NEXT UP
NJIT will return to the east coast and have 12 days to rest, recover and train before heading to Philadelphia for a March 31 tilt at Temple.
