NEWARK, NJ–Three Highlanders scored in double-digits paced by a team-best 12 points and career-high nine rebounds from rising junior Aria Myers as NJIT picked up a 56-49 win over visiting St. Francis Brooklyn inside the Wellness and Events Center Wednesday evening in women's basketball non-conference action.
With the win on Wednesday, NJIT moves to .500 on the young season (2-2) and picks up its first win of the season at home inside the Wellness and Events Center. St. Francis Brooklyn drops to 1-3 on the season.
Myers, who scored a career-best in the home opener on November 11 against Lafayette, has scored in double-figures through four games thus far this season. This evening, she finished 4-for-8 from three-point range, pulling down nine rebounds which set a new personal best for the guard from Cedar Grove, NJ.
Sophomore forward Trinity Williams filled up the box score on Wednesday, chipping in 11 points, grabbing five rebounds, dishing out three assists and recording a season-best three blocks (one-shy of her personal-best mark; 4 at UMBC, 1.12.22).
Junior guard Lyzi Litwinko added 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting with four rebounds and freshman Alejandra Zuniga, who is coming off a career-best performance at Rutgers on Sunday (23 points), netted nine points and added five rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench for NJIT.
St. Francis Brooklyn's Alyssa Fisher, the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Week led all players with 16 points followed by 13 points and eight rebounds from Bella Green.
NJIT jumped out to a quick start at home, 12-2, behind six straight points from Aria Myers, resulting in a St. Francis Brooklyn timeout at the 5:15 mark. The Terriers used a 9-2 spurt to close out the final 3:50 for a 17-11 score.
The Highlanders used a 5-2 run midway through the second quarter capped by a three-pointer by Kenna Squier at the 4:38 mark to give the Highlanders a five-point cushion, 25-20. Freshman Alejandra Zuniga sank a three-pointer from the top of the key with less than a minute to go and the Highlanders headed into the half ahead, 33-28.
NJIT's Trinity Williams and Aria Myers scored nine points sharing game-high honors through the first 20 minutes with St. Francis Brooklyn's Bella Green, who netted nine points.
The Highlanders continued to extend its lead to start the third quarter, using an 8-2 spurt capped by a three-pointer by Aria Myers for an 11-point advantage, 41-30. St. Francis Brooklyn responded with a 7-0 run over 3:05 to cut the NJIT lead to five, 41-36, at the 1:42 mark.
A low scoring start to the fourth quarter for both teams saw the Highlanders take a nine-point lead, 51-42, on a layup by Litwinko with less than four to play. The Terriers slimmed the lead to six, 53-47, after an old-fashioned three-point play by Alyssa Fisher at the 2:44 mark. NJIT's Litwinko finished with a layup in the paint and made one-of-two from the free throw line with 1:13 left to play to put the Highlanders ahead by nine, 56-47, to secure the first win of the season inside the Wellness and Events Center, 56-49.
NJIT will wrap up a two-game homestand on Saturday, hosting Central Connecticut State on at 1pm as part of a doubleheader with NJIT men's basketball who will host American in the men's home opener at 4pm. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN3.
