LORETTO, PA--No. 10 NJIT swept the weekend EIVA Conference series at Saint Francis U, 3-0, to conclude its final road match of the regular season Saturday afternoon in men's volleyball action.
NJIT (13-5, 13-3 in EIVA) won in straight sets 25-17, 25-13 and 25-23 led by a team-best 11 kills from Alvaro Gimeno followed by nine kills by Julian Meissner. Gimeno hit .364 for the match and Meissner combined for a .444 hitting percentage.
Freshman setter Griffin Fieseler led the match with 23 assists while adding eight digs and three kills. Classmate libero Joe Kennedy paced the match with nine digs while in front of the net, Gimeno combined for five block assists.
Michael Fisher led Saint Francis (5-18, 4-12 EIVA) for the second straight match with a match-high 12 kills. Setter AJ Schmidt just missed notching a double-double, piling up 23 assists and eight digs.
In the first frame, NJIT took control early, jumping out to a 11-4 advantage and later extended its lead to 17-9. The Highlanders hit .390 with 11 kills on 25 swings with just two errors, taking the first set 25-21.
The NJIT momentum continued into the second frame, hitting an impressive .304 vs. Saint Francis U with a -.061 hitting percentage. After both teams traded points early in the set, NJIT scored seven consecutive points to push ahead, 17-9. NJIT used a 4-1 run to close out the frame with a 25-17 victory.
Saint Francis U got off to a hot start in the third set, taking an early 11-6 lead, resulting in a Highlanders timeout. Sparked by a kill from Martin de Chavarria, NJIT used a 5-1 run to tie the set at 13-all, resulting in a Red Flash timeout. Both teams traded points, knotting the score for the final time in the set at 18-all and saw the Highlanders take a 23-19 lead. The Red Flash pulled within one of the Highlanders twice late in the set but the Highlanders would hold on for the 3-0 sweep with a 25-23 victory.
NJIT will close out the regular season inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center next weekend on April 9-10, hosting George Mason. Both matches are scheduled for 4pm and will be streamed live on the America East Digital Network.
Saturday will mark Senior Day for five graduating seniors -- Marcus Jackson, Alvaro Gimeno, Luca Berger, Logan Heft and Parker Lui.
