Men's Swimming Picks Up Pair Of Relay Wins On Day One Of America East Championships

NEWARK, N.J. --- The NJIT men's swimming and diving team, the host of this year's America East Swimming Championships, kicked off their first-ever appearance in the league postseason meet Friday at the Wellness and Events Center Natatorium.

The Highlanders concluded Day 1 of the men's championships in third place with 210 points after picking up a pair of victories in the 200 Medley Relay and the 800 Free Relay.

The quartet of Edward Madrigal, Nicholas Lyons, Ian Horstkamp-Vinekar, and Joshua Franco posted a time of 1:30.55 in the 200 Medley Relay to give NJIT its first-ever America East Championship title in the first event of the men's session. The Highlanders edged out UMBC by .20 seconds (1:30.75) to secure the win.

The evening's final event - the 800 Free Relay - saw NJIT claim a second victory by an even thinner margin. Madrigal, Franco, Horstkamp-Vinekar, and Matthew Bevan combined to record a time of 6:43.75, holding off Binghamton's relay team by .08 seconds (6:43.83) in a photo finish.
