NEWARK, N.J. --- NJIT Women's Soccer (2-3-1, 0-2-1 AE) closes out its two-game homestand on Sunday afternoon against UMBC.

LAST TIME OUT
A strong second half turnaround nearly helped NJIT erase a two-goal deficit but the Highlanders would come just short in a 2-1 defeat to the Vermont Catamounts on March 25. NJIT went into halftime training 2-0 after Vermont converted half of their shots on goal into points but the Highlanders came out in the second half with renewed vigor. NJIT's shot total in the final 45 minutes (11) almost eclipsed Vermont's for the game (12) and the Highlanders forced the Catamounts into eight second-half fouls after drawing none in the opening period. One of those fouls - drawn in the box by graduate student Lizzy Wolfe in the 66th minute - turned into a successful penalty shot for senior Nicole Loehle, who netted her first goal of the year and first since Oct. 4, 2018 against FGCU. The Highlanders came inches away from tying the score in the 85th minute but sophomore Lauren Chamberlain's third and final shot bounced down off the top crossbar but did not cross the goal line. Redshirt sophomore Molly Saylor finished the game with four saves, marking the fifth time in six games that she has made at least four stops.

CONVERTING PKs
Nicole Loehle's penalty kick goal against Vermont was the first successful PK attempt for the Highlanders since October 7, 2018 when Fiona Wright converted hers in a 4-2 defeat at Stetson.

AMERICA EAST HONORS
NJIT has already claimed three America East weekly awards in its first few weeks as a member of the conference. Freshman Corbin Reifschneider was named Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week after NJIT's season opening win over Drexel on February 21 and Molly Saylor earned Defensive Player of the Week honors on March 2 after the Highlanders' shutout of Wagner.

A SEASON LIKE NO OTHER
Like many schools across the country, the current COVID-19 public health crisis has pushed NJIT's fall 2020 campaign into the Spring. Please bookmark NJITHighlanders.com to keep up-to-date on any schedule changes that may arise because of the pandemic or weather-related issues.

As for fans this season, due to COVID protocol policy, the NJIT Department of Athletics is prohibiting spectators at our Indoor & Outdoor Athletic Events.

NEW HOME FOR THE HIGHLANDERS
One season after christening a new home field as the first NJIT team to play on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium, the Highlanders will begin this season as members of a new conference home, the America East. NJIT became the league's tenth member on July 1, 2020 after five seasons in the ASUN Conference that included a pair of ASUN Semifinal appearances and one top-two regular season finish (No. 2 seed in 2018).

2020 OUTLOOK
NJIT will bring back 20 returners and incorporate five newcomers as the program looks to use momentum from last season's ASUN Semifinal appearance to propel them in their first campaign in the America East.

Fifth-year head coach Ally Nick's squad will be led by lauded defensive stars (All-ASUN Second Team selection Siani Magruder, ASUN All-Freshman and All-Tournament honoree Molly Saylor, ASUN All-Tournament selection Nicole Loehle) and highly capable offensive talent (leading returning goal scorers Lauren Chamberlain, Bailey Chant and Tara Walenczyk).

In its first-ever America East Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Highlanders were picked seventh out of ten teams. Reigning league champion Stony Brook was tabbed as the preseason favorite.

TOP RANKINGS
NJIT enters Thursday's contest ranked: 1st in the America East in total saves (40), second in saves per game (6.67).

ALL-TIME SERIES
NJIT and UMBC will be meeting for the third time in their history and first time as conference opponents. Both games have gone into at least one overtime and their meeting during the 2019 season opener (Aug. 22) was the first-ever contest on the new Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium. NJIT leads the all-time series 1-0-1, including last year's scoreless draw.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Outside of a season opening draw against Towson, UMBC is scheduled to face all America East foes on its schedule. The Retrievers are currently 0-2-1 (0-2 AE) after a 2-1 defeat against UAlbany on March 21. UMBC is led by Christina Corbi (1 G), Megan McKye (1 A), and Jade Wilkins (1.53 GAA, 18 saves).

NEXT UP
NJIT will play its final regular season road game on Sunday, April 4 at 1 p.m. against Binghamton.
