Men’s Soccer Recognized by NJIT Board of Trustees for Historic Season


NEWARK, NJ--NJIT President Dr. Joel Bloom and the NJIT Board of Trustees recognized the NJIT men's soccer team on Thursday, February 6 inside Eberhardt Hall for the Highlanders 2019 historic season. 

"It's a great honor to be present with President Dr. Joel Bloom and the NJIT Board of Trustees," ASUN Coach of the Year Fernando Barboto added.  "The recognition of the accomplishments of our team and coaching staff is a historical moment in all of our lives."

NJIT concluded the 2019 season with numerous accomplishments:

  • First NCAA appearance at the Division I level

  • 2019 ASUN Tournament and Regular Season Champions

  • Tied the school-record for wins (10)

  • Four major ASUN Conference Awards -- Coach of the Year (Fernando Barboto), Player of the Year (Rene White), Goalkeeper of the Year (Samuel Reisgys) and Rookie of the Year (Alejandro Rabell)

  • White closed out the season: NJIT Division I career goals (34) and points leader (74); NJIT D1 single season leader in goals (17); ranks tied for first in the nation in goals

  • Andrew Nino - ASUN first-team concludes season as NJIT Division I assists leader (17)

  • White and Rabell ranked in the top 65 in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer; White 61 out of 100 players; Rabell 56 out of 100 (freshman ranking)

  • White – Scholar All-East Region First Team

  • White – All-ECAC Team

  • White & Nino – All-Atlantic Team; White (first team); Nino (third team)

  • NJIT Men's Soccer Coaching Staff Named Atlantic Region Staff of the Year

  • Collected first-ever ASUN Conference Regular Season title in any sport with 5-1-0 mark in league play

  • The Highlanders won their first-ever ASUN Championship Final in any sport and became the second No. 1 seed in the last seven conference tournaments to claim the title

  • Highlanders ranked in the top-10 of the United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region poll all season, with its highest ranking, week two at the No. 2 spot. In the final week, NJIT ranked fifth out of 10 teams.
