ATLANTA, Ga. --- Senior defender
Jessica Aseng has been named this week's ASUN Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. the conference announced Monday afternoon.
The award is the first-ever ASUN weekly accolade for Aseng, NJIT's second of the year (Molly Saylor was named Defensive Player of the Week on August 26), and fifth DPOW honor all-time. It also marks the first time the Highlanders have produced more than one DPOW award winner in a season.
Aseng and the NJIT back line held the Highlanders' first two ASUN opponents to only one goal in a pair of victories over Stetson and North Alabama over the weekend. The pair of wins moved NJIT to 2-0 in league play for the first time in program history.
The Bushkill, Pa. native also scored the first goal of her career in Sunday's game at North Alabama, putting the Highlanders ahead in their eventual 2-1 win over the Lions.
Collectively, the NJIT defense is leading the ASUN in a number of categories: goals allowed (7; only team in single digits), goals against average (0.67), and shutouts (4; tied).
Aseng and the Highlanders will return to action on Sunday, October 6 at 1 p.m. for a Homecoming weekend matchup with North Florida.
