Liberty Spoils Rainy Senior Day For Women's Soccer

Story Links

NEWARK, N.J. --- Senior Day for the NJIT women's soccer team ended on a bittersweet note as the Highlanders closed their regular season with a 1-0 home loss to the Liberty Flames on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The Highlanders (6-7-3, 3-4-1 ASUN) will be continuing their season in the ASUN Conference Tournament next weekend but a steady stream of inclement weather and a Liberty team (10-6-2, 6-2 ASUN) locked into a top-3 seed in the tournament put a damper on NJIT's final home game of the season.

The lone goal of the game came in the 17th minute of the first half as the Flames turned a throw-in on the far side of midfield into a running one touch finish by leading scorer Gabrielle Farrell.

Liberty outshot NJIT 8-3 in the first 45 minutes but increased their pressure in the second and held a 6-5 advantage on attempts.

NJIT had its best chances to net an equalizer in that second period. Within a 30 second span in the 68th minute, seniors Fiorella Doglio and Jessica Aseng attempted back-to-back shots. Doglio's shot was saved and Aseng's chance went out wide.

The Highlanders put together one more push in the 89th minute but Ariana Caminos could not get a clean foot on NJIT's final shot and the attempt missed wide left.

OTHER NOTES
  • NJIT honored women's soccer's seven seniors - Chinyere Chambers, Fiorella Doglio, Emily Heckman, Dunja Trajkovic, Lizzy Wolfe, Alexis Magruder, and Jessica Aseng - before today's contest. Head Coach Ally Nick put all six active seniors - Wolfe is out due to injury - in the starting lineup.
  • NJIT ends its first season on the new Lubetkin Field with a 4-1-2 (.571) record at home.
  • The Highlanders are locked into the sixth seed in the ASUN Tournament. The team will play its quarterfinal match against the No. 3 seed on Friday, November 1 on the campus of the No. 2 seed. The semifinals will be played on the top two seeds' campuses on Sunday, November 9 and the top remaining seed will host the ASUN Championships on Saturday, November 9.
