SANTA BARBARA, CA—Eleventh-ranked Cal State Northridge swept, visiting NJIT, 3-0, at the 2018 UCSB Asics Invitational hosted by UC Santa Barbara.
Cal State Northridge (2-0) won in straight sets—25-20, 25-15 and 26-24.
The Matadors were led by Arvis Greene, who posted a match-best 10 kills on 21 attempts with just three errors for a .333 hitting percentage.
Setter Schylar Lillethorup combined for 24 assists while Dimitar Kalchev posted five digs.
Cal State Northridge held a slight 8-to-6 advantage in service aces, led by Greene with four and Kalchev with three.
In front of the net, Eric Chance and Josiah Byers each combined for four total blocks (1 solo, 3 assists) as the Matadors held a 9-to-2 team blocking advantage.
NJIT (0-3) was paced by newcomer
Alvaro Rubio, who joined the team in January from Salou, Spain, registering a team-best eight kills and five digs. Sophomore
Piotr Namiotko added seven kills.
Setters
Ricardo Whitaker and
Zachary Hresko piled up 14 and nine assists respectively. Libero
Shannon Heckman recorded five digs to share team-high honors with Rubio.
Rubio combined for three of NJIT's six service aces.
NJIT will conclude its trip out West Friday night against Long Beach State. First spike is set for 11pm (ET).
