South Dakota State Tops Highlanders in Season Opener

NJIT Highlights

BROOKINGS, SD— South Dakota State's (1-0) Macy Miller scored a game-best 21 points en route to a 92-48 victory over visiting NJIT (0-1) at Frost Arena Friday evening in the season-opener for both teams.

South Dakota State's Miller set the tone for the contest as she finished 9-of-12 from the field and pulled down four rebounds.

The Jackrabbits had four other players in double-digits – Myah Selland and Madison Guebert finished with 12 points and Ellie Thompson finished with 10 points.  Chynna Stevens finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

NJIT redshirt sophomore Amarri Trueheart led the way for the Highlanders, netting a career-best 12 points.  Redshirt junior Tatianna Torres was NJIT's other double-figure scorer with 11 points.  Sophomore Tracey Brereton scored nine points while freshman Dez Allen recorded eight points in her collegiate debut.

The Highlanders trailed 6-0 in the first three minutes of the first quarter.  NJIT quickly cut the lead to 6-4 before South Dakota State would close out the quarter with a 19-14 lead.  Trueheart finished the quarter going 4-for-6 from the field.

Torres hit a three-point basket cutting South Dakota State's lead to 19-17 to open to the second quarter.  That would be the closest NJIT would get to South Dakota State the rest of the game.

South Dakota State would extend its lead to 30-21 with 2:48 to go in the second quarter before Trueheart would hit two jumpers to cut the lead to 30-25.  Macy Miller hit a three pointer with seven seconds remaining to set the halftime lead for South Dakota State at 34-27.

The Jackrabbits finished the game on a 58-21 run as NJIT was outscored 31-4 in the third quarter.  Redshirt sophomore Jillian Libby and Torres each hit layups to score the only points for NJIT in the third quarter.  The Jackrabbits led 65-31 at the end of the third quarter.

South Dakota State continued to pull away as they scored 27 points in the final quarter.

The meeting was just the fourth time the school's would face-off against one-another.  With the victory, South Dakota State improves to 4-0 all-time against NJIT.

NJIT (0-1) will continue their road-trip on Sunday afternoon visiting North Dakota State in Fargo, North Dakota.  Tip is at 1:00 p.m. (CT) from the Scheels Center.  The Highlanders are 0-4 all-time against North Dakota State.
