NEWARK, NJ—NJIT men's volleyball swept an exhibition match from Alderson Broaddus University by scores of 25-15, 25-14, and 25-13 Saturday night in Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
Alderson Broaddus, from Philippi, WV, competes as a member of NCAA Division II in its varsity intercollegiate sports, but was determined by the NCAA not to meet requirements for recognition as an NCAA program in men's volleyball this season.
Alderson Broaddus plays half of its 20-match schedule against non-varsity teams, falling short of the NCAA requirement that a team's statistics and records are countable only if said team plays a majority of its contests against other four-year varsity teams.
The Battlers have several varsity opponents in 2015, including Harvard and Sacred Heart, which, like NJIT play in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA).
NJIT's record stays at 7-8, while Alderson Broaddus is 12-5, including all of its contests.
Jabarry Goodridge had a match-best 13 kills for NJIT, which hit .435 on the attack while serving 12 aces—six by Goodridge—to just one ace by the visitors.
No one had more than five kills for the visitors, who struggled on offense, posting more attack errors (18) than kills (15).
All of NJIT's remaining eight matches will count in the NCAA records and statistics. The next five matches are away, four in the EIVA and then one at Springfield, which has won all three Division III national championships since the NCAA began sponsoring a Division III national championship for men's volleyball.
NJIT's schedule resumes next weekend with the challenging EIVA weekend in Pennsylvania. The Highlanders will visit Saint Francis in Loretto on Friday night and then take on perennial EIVA champion Penn State on Saturday afternoon.
