Men’s Volleyball Falls 3-0 at No. 14 Penn State in 2013 Season Finale

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA--Penn State, ranked 14th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I-II national coaches' poll, swept visiting NJIT, 3-0, in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action Saturday evening at Rec Hall in the season finale for the Highlanders.
 
NJIT closes out the 2013 season with a 4-9 record in the EIVA and 7-21 overall while Penn State improves to 13-1 in conference play and 21-7 overall.  The Nittany Lions, the top seed in the EIVA Tournament, will host George Mason on April 25 at 7:30pm.
 
Penn State won in straight sets Saturday, 25-17, 25-20, 25-17, led by Aaron Russell and Peter Russell, who registered 11 kills apiece.  Aaron Russell posted a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs while hitting .500 for the match with three errors on 16 swings.  Peter Russell combined for a .435 hitting percentage on 23 attempts with just one error.  Nick Goodell added nine kill and six digs for the Nittany Lions.
 
Setter Taylor Hammond piled up a match-high 35 assists while Aaron led the match defensively with 13 digs.  Penn State held a 6-to-1 advantage in service aces led by Aaron Russell with three.
 
The Highlanders were paced by Chris Kaepernick and Kajetan Borecki, who each notched nine kills.  Kaepernick had a strong performance in his final match of the season hitting .429 on 21 attempts with no errors.  Middle Doug Battersby finished with a .667 hitting percentage with four kills on six swings with no errors to go along with two solo blocks.
 
Senior setter Matthew Lui produced a team-high 22 assists and added seven digs while libero Brady Smith, a second-team all-EIVA honoree notched eight digs.
 
In front of the net, the Highlanders held a 9-to-5 team blocking advantage led by Highlanders Borecki and Kevin Van Oss with four total blocks.
