BOSTON—Northeastern poured in 48 first-half points, including eight three-point baskets, to build a big lead en route to a comfortable 70-55 women's basketball win over visiting NJIT Saturday afternoon at Cabot Center.
The combination of Northeastern's hot shooting, including 8-for-17 from three-point distance, and NJIT's difficulty of making shots in the opening 20 minutes resulted in a 40-27 halftime lead for the Huskies, who went on to raise their season record to 4-1 with Saturday's victory.
Northeastern finished with four double-figure scorers, paced by junior guard A'lece Mark's game-high 18 points. Senior center Jewel Tunstull netted 16 points, while guards Kazzidy Stewart and Amencie Mercier finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Huskies.
Mark, a quick 5-foot-7 guard, led all rebounders with nine while being a big part of Northeastern's first-half offense, making 3-of-5 of her three-point attempts.
NJIT's scoring leaders were junior guard
Martina Matejcikova (14 points), forward
Uju Nwankwo (12) and graduate student
Shakia Robinson (11). Nwankwo, standing at 6-foot, led the Highlander rebounders with 7, while Robinson and
Nicole Maticka each grabbed 6.
The Huskies, who were picked to finish third in the Colonial Athletic Association, never trailed against NJIT, and quickly went ahead, 18-7 on a layup by Francesca Sally, at the 13:42 mark.
The Highlanders cut the deficit to single-digits on multiple occasions, the closest coming with 5:33 remaining in the first half, after a three-pointer by Matejcikova and one of two made at the free throw line by Robinson, for a 30-23 score.
Northeastern closed out the final 5:23 of the first half on an 18-4 spurt led by Mark and Amencie Mercier with five points apiece heading into halftime with a 48-27 lead.
The first-half rebounding was close, with Northeastern edging the Highlanders 16-to-14. Northeastern made 59 percent of its total field goal tries (19-32) and (8-17; 47 percent) on three-point tries.
The second-half totals showed Northeastern shooting just 9-for-24 (37 percent) from the field, including 2-for-7 on threes, but the Huskies made 11 of 15 free throws, for a total of 31 points in the half. NJIT scored 28 points, shooting 12-for-36 (33 percent) from the field.
NJIT will play its fourth straight game on the road on Tuesday, when the Highlanders travel to St. Francis Brooklyn for a 7pm tipoff. NJIT will close out the month of November at home after the Thanksgiving Holiday, hosting Bucknell at Noon. November 30 will be Alumnae Day.
Last time both teams met on November 20, 2012,
Rayven Johnson's huge second half keyed the Highlanders' comeback win over the Terriers, 73-61, in Newark.
