NEW HAVEN, CT – The NJIT women's tennis team opened the 2012 season on Saturday with a 6-1 decision over Sacred Heart on the campus of Yale University.
NJIT won five out of six singles contests while the home team picked up one point taking two out of three doubles contests Saturday.
Sophomore
Jana Luste and senior
Nina Mayevska were victorious in a three-set tilt at second and third singles. Luste topped Sacred Heart's Kate Donnelly, 0-6, 6-0, 6-0 followed by a defeat at third singles by Mayevksa over Nicole Rydzewski, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
NJIT's
Carolina Zanotta and
Martina Tripcovici were double winners on the day winning in straight sets at the fourth and fifth spot while coming out on top at third doubles over the Pioneers Rydzewski and Kristen Legenza, 8-2. Zanotta was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at fourth singles followed by Tripcovici at the fifth spot, winning by identical scores, 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore
Hannelore MacDonald also won in straight sets at sixth singles posting a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kristen Legends.
At first singles, Sacred Heart's Gabi Kaldan won the first set, 7-5, over NJIT's
Ksenia Kuzmenko. The Highlander sophomore blanked Kaldan in the second frame, 6-0 but Kaldan prevailed in the final set, 7-5.
The Highlanders will return to action on Sunday at 4pm in The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility hosting Saint Peter's.
