NEWARK, NJ – Stevens Institute of Technology extended its win streak to nine Wednesday afternoon defeating NJIT 3-1 in men's volleyball non-conference action at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
Stevens improves to 17-8 on the year, while the Highlanders, who close out their home season, drop to 2-16.
Stevens grabbed a 2-0 lead, winning the first two sets, 30-27 and 30-25. The home team bounced back in the third frame with a 30-25 victory but Stevens claimed the match 30-24 in the fourth set.
NJIT freshman Christian Puszies notched a match-best 24 kills for the Highlanders. Classmate Kevin Van Oss added nine kills for NJIT while setters' Matthew Lui and Adam Gustafson posted double-doubles. Lui piled up 26 assists and 11 digs while Gustafson had 20 assists and 12 digs. Middle Doug Battersby led the Highlanders in front of the net with four block assists and one solo.
Stevens had three men with double-figure kill totals, paced by SteFan PremDas's 22 kills. Senior John Dennan posted 15 while Jonathan Landis recorded 13 kills. Junior setter Brandt Grobeis had a match-best 57 assists for the Ducks while Aaron Ostrovsky produced a match-best 18 digs. PremDas and Dennan had 11 digs apiece for the visitors. Jake Modestow was the top blocker for Stevens with seven block assists and one solo while Timothy Karl followed with six block assists.
NJIT has three remaining matches on its 2010 schedule – April 13 at NYU, April 15 at Princeton and April 17 at Harvard.
