Longwood Defeats Highlanders

Amanda Dotten nets team-leading fourth goal
Box Score

NEWARK, NJ—Sophomore Lindsay Ottavio scored a goal in each half, leading Longwood to a 3-1 women's soccer victory over NJIT in non-conference play Sunday afternoon on Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium.

Ottavio, a sophomore who ranks fifth in Division I in goals per game (0.929) in the latest NCAA statistics, raised her impressive season total to 16 goals in 16 games with the pair of tallies against the Highlanders.

The Lancers (10-6) scored the game's first three goals, two in the first half, before NJIT (2-11-1) got on the board.

Longwood got an unassisted goal from sophomore Nikki Gilson in the 23rd minute and Ottavio made it 2-0 in the 31st minute, assisted by Mackenzie King. Ottavio's second goal, in the 51st minute, was assisted by Jessica Varela and Kelsey Pardue.

The Highlanders, who had more opportunities in the second half than in the first, avoided the shutout on a goal by sophomore Amanda Dotten in the 61st minute, assisted by freshman Amanda Redden. Dotten leads the Highlanders this season with four goals.

Longwood used two goalkeepers. Grad student Marcia Biddle started and played the first 60:21, making six saves and departing at the stoppage following Dotten's goal. Sophomore Kyra Byron played the last 29:39 for the Lancers and did not face a shot on goal.

NJIT senior Sadie Mele went the distance in goal and made eight saves, four in each half.

The overall shots were 17-11 in favor of Longwood, while the shots on goal were 11-7 for the Lancers.

Longwood's first goal was opportunistic, as Gilson exploited a turnover in the NJIT defense. The Highlanders lost the ball at the top of the box and the Longwood sophomore pounced, gaining control and shooting under the crossbar and into the goal before the defenders could recover at 22:35.

On the second goal, Longwood beat NJIT's offside trap. King played the ball from behind the center stripe ahead to Ottavio, who stayed onside before bursting ahead of the Highlander defense with a clear path between her and NJIT's Mele. At first, the keeper tried to come far out to break up the play. Too late to short-circuit the play, Mele retreated toward her line, but Ottavio scored on a clear shot from 20 yards away.

The third tally, at 50:51, was nicely played all-around by Longwood. Varela pushed the ball down the right side and sent a backwards centering pass to Pardue, who played it on one touch ahead on the left to Ottavio, who fired into the net from about eight yards.

The Highlanders finally got on the board when Redden found Dotten, who shot from the right side, beating a sprawling Biddle inside the left post at 60:21.

NJIT's remaining three regular season games are inside the Great West Conference East Division. First up is a visit from Delaware State on Friday at 5 pm on Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium. NJIT won the first meeting, 4-3, on October 8 in Delaware.
