CAMBRIDGE, MA--Harvard defeated NJIT, 3-1, in a non-divisional Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match Saturday afternoon that was most noteworthy for the Highlanders in that freshmen led all of their statistical categories.
Harvard, which plays in the EIVA Hay Division, defeated the Highlanders, who play in the EIVA Tait Division, 30-26, 30-26, 25-30, and 30-18.
The Crimson leaders were: Brady Weissbourd, with 27 kills, four service aces, and five blocks (co-leader); Gil Weintraub, with 59 assists; Erik Kuld, with 11 digs; and, Soren Rosier, with five blocks (co-leader).
NJIT, which has stumbled after a 3-1 start to the season, got encouraging performances from some of its freshmen--Adam Gustafson, handling the setter chores, had 47 assists and a match-best six blocks (1 block solo, 5 block assists), along with sharing the team lead with 11 digs; and, Glen DeMagalhaes had a team-leading 16 kills. Freshman Raphael Mattos added 11 kills for the Highlanders.
NJIT also got contributions from junior Charles Bell, who finished with 15 kills and just four errors in 26 attempts for a .423 attack percentage, and from sophomore Chuck Richmond, who collected 11 digs to share honors in that category with Gustafson.
The Highlanders will be back in action Monday night when they travel down Warren Street for the second of their two scheduled meetings with neighborhood rival Rutgers-Newark. That match begins at 7 pm in Rutgers' Golden Dome Athletic Center. Rutgers-Newark won the first meeting of the season, 3-0, on February 25 at NJIT.
