Highlanders Grab Third Straight Win

CAMBRIDGE, MA - The New Jersey Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated Harvard 3-2 Friday night in an Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Hay Division match-up at the Malkin Athletic Center.

The Highlanders, now 3-0, won their third straight win tonight in the EIVA Hay Division. NJIT began their 2007 campaign with a 3-0 sweep against NYU on Thursday, January 25, tallied their second win Wednesday, January 31 topping Sacred Heart 3-0 and went five sets against Harvard, coming out on top 3-2.

NJIT was led by junior Leonardo Paludo who posted a game-high 25 kills on 47 attempts with just 6 errors hitting .404 for the game. Senior Greg Wagner tallied 12 kills, seven digs and three blocks, while Amobi Armstrong followed behind with 11 kills and eight digs.

Sophomore setter Rodrigo Correa posted a game-high 41 assists. Correa also tallied six digs and two blocks. Eduardo Welter had a team-high 11 digs while teammate Mike Nonnenmann chipped in 11 assists.

Against Harvard, the Crimson grabbed the first game 30-28 while NJIT then won the next two taking a 2-1 lead, winning the games, 30-26 and 30-24, respectively. Harvard tied the game at 2-2 taking game four, 30-28 and forcing a deciding game. The Highlanders claimed the hard-fought match with a 15-11 win in game five.

Harvard had four men with double-figure kills totals, paced by Gil Weintraub's 17. Dave Fitz notched 38 assists for the Crimson, while Laurence Favrot and Brian Rapp produced 10 digs apiece. Brady Weissbourd collected six block assists.

The Highlanders return to action on Monday, February 5 when they host Ramapo College at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center at 7pm.
