Box Score
ANNAPOLIS, MD -
Navy, one of the top teams on the 2007 NJIT women's soccer schedule, scored twice in the first 16 minutes and continued to a 3-0 win over the visiting Highlanders Sunday evening.
The Mids, who advanced to the second round of the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's College Cup last year, are 5-0-1 at home after their victory over NJIT. Navy, which has 15 letterwinners, including eight starters back from last year's Patriot League championship team, is 7-4-2 overall in 2007.
Navy got on the board quickly Sunday thanks to a goal off a header from a corner kick in the fourth minute. Shelly Moeller picked up her first goal of the season, converting the corner kick by Kristen Laraway at 3:07.
The Midshipmen increased their advantage at 15:36, when Brigitte Fox scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, assisted by Anastasia Abid and Kari Weniger.
Neither team dented the net for another 59:27 after Navy had taken a 2-0 lead.
Lauren Bresnahan wrapped up the scoring for Navy on a penalty kick at 75:03. Bresnahan, a sophomore center back, is the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week.
NJIT freshman Sadie Mele started and went the distance in goal, making 12 saves--six in each half--for the Highlanders. They also had a team save in the second half.
Rachel Tarbox and Beth Reed combined for Navy's fifth shutout of the season. Reed played the first 77 minutes and Tarbox went the last 13 minutes.
Emma Vinski and Michelle Borth each took two shots for NJIT and Dena Baskous took one.
The Highlanders, who have played six straight road games since their last home contest on September 19, are off for a week.
They will close the string of road games with the two longest trips in program history. On Sunday, October 14, NJIT will visit North Dakota State in a return match of a 2006 home game. And on Friday, October 19, the Highlanders will visit Orem, Utah, for a United Soccer Conference tilt at Utah Valley.
