Box Score
OREM, UT -
Up a goal at halftime, the Utah Valley women broke out with four second-half scores in a 5-0 United Soccer Conference victory over visiting NJIT Friday afternoon.
Although the Wolverines led 1-0 after the first half, the teams were practically deadlocked in the statistics through 45 minutes. The shots favored Utah Valley by a slight margin--8-6 overall and 6-5 in shots on goal. And NJIT had a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
The second half stat sheet told a different story, as the Wolverines netted four more goals and outshot the Highlanders by a wide margin.
NJIT goalkeeper Sadie Mele stopped 11 Utah Valley shots, while the Wolverines posted a combined shutout. Mallory Schott started and went the first 75:24, making five saves--all in the opening half. Hailey Brown finished up and did not face a shot on goal over the last 14:36.
The Wolverines got on the board in the 16th minute when Athena Bradshaw sprinted ahead of the pack and collected a feed from teammate Andi Bagdan for the only goal of the first half.
Five different Highlanders--Erika Taugher, Kyrsten Howell-Harries, Briana Morales, Emma Vinski and Kori Washington--got shots on goal in the first half, but Utah Valley's Schott was equal to the task each time.
Utah Valley did not score again until early in the second half when Taryn Smith fired a shot from 20 yards off of a corner kick at 50:43.
Adrianne Schneider made it 3-0 when she scored on a rebound of a shot by Chelsey Ellison in the 63rd minute. Shantae Adams cashed in the final two goals for Utah Valley, scoring in the 78th and 88th minutes.
NJIT, which completed a stretch of eight straight matches on the road, including the last two in North Dakota and Utah, respectively, finally has a home game upcoming.
Indeed, the Highlanders will play three of their last four regular season matches at home, beginning with a USC contest vs. Howard on Wednesday at 7 pm on Lubetkin Field. The match on October 24 will be NJIT's first on campus since it hosted Drexel on September 19.
