Baseball Falls in Non-Conference Action at Rutgers

David Marcano Records Three Hits to Extend Hitting Streak to 12

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The NJIT baseball team was defeated by host Rutgers, 11-1, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon on Bainton Field. 

The loss ends the Highlanders winning streak at four and drops their record to an even 10-10 through the first 20 games of the season. Rutgers improved to 17-6 this season.

After a scoreless first inning, Rutgers got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second and went ahead 2-0 on a pair of solo home runs.

The Scarlet Knights broke the game open with a pair of three-run innings in the fifth and six to make the lead 8-0 heading into the seventh inning.

NJIT finally got on the scoreboard in seventh thanks to an RBI single from David Marcano.

Rutgers added a pair of runs in the home half of the seventh and another in the eighth to make the final score 11-1.

Marcano finished with three of NJIT's six hits to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. The graduate student now hitting .373 this season.

Jared Donnelly also kept his hitting streak alive, reaching base on a bunt single to lead off the third inning. It marked the ninth-straight game he has recorded a hit. 

Freshman Michael Doyle was inserted into the game was a pinch runner in the seventh inning and recorded his first-career base hit in the ninth.

Joey Craska piched two innings and didn't allow an earned run, while also recording a strikeout.

NJIT will look to get back to its winning ways on Friday when it welcomes UMass Lowell to New Jersey for the first contest of a three-game America East Conference series. First pitch of Friday's game is slated for 6pm at Jim Hynes Stadium in Union.
