29 NJIT Athletes Named to the Great West Conference 2010-11 Winter/Spring Academic Team

– Twenty-Nine NJIT student-athletes in six sports were named to the Winter/Spring 2010-11 Great West Conference all-Academic team, Director of Media Relations Jacque Cottrell announced Monday.

 

Leading the honorees are eight athletes who have achieved 4.0 grade point averages.  Those individuals are: NJIT track and field athlete Jonathan Daudelin, North Dakota track and field athlete Kristen Haas and women's basketball player Mallory Youngblut, South Dakota track and field athletes Nick Beare, Alexa Duling, Megan Meyer and Crystal Schiernbeck and Utah Valley track and field athlete Sally Hansen.

Baseball

 

Steven Ace (Senior, RHP, Beach Lake, PA)… Appeared in 12 games in relief and did not allow an earned run in his first four appearances. ranked fourth on the team with a 5.40 ERA. … Industrial Engineering major.

 

Teddy Bickert (Sophomore, CF, Ulster Park, NY) … Finished the season with a .250 batting average, 52 hits, 35 runs, 18 runs batted in, eight doubles and two home runs. ... held an eight-game hitting streak (March 30 vs. Lafayette - April 8 vs. Utah Valley). …Business major.

 

Bryan Bleakley (Junior, C, Ewing, NJ) … Started every game (55). ...ranked second on the team with a .286 batting average. ... team-leading five home runs and tied for third on the team with 10 doubles. … Civil Engineering major.

 

John Bouck (Junior, C, Linden, NJ) … Started 21 games and logged 71 at bats. … Mechanical Engineering major.

 

Tripp Davis (Sophomore, LHP, Greenville, OH) … NJIT's most reliable pitcher since the start of the year. ...first-team all-Great West honoree. ...NJCBA All-State Division I second team. ... team-leading earned run average (3.69). ... sixth complete game vs. Chicago State (5/25) is a new NJIT Division I record, while his 107.1 innings pitched in 2011 is a new all-time school record. ...Davis' six wins (6-6) matched the school Division I record for a season ... career-high 13 strikeouts vs. defending Great West Conference champion Utah Valley on April 10 was a school DI record later broken by classmate Mark Leiter, Jr. .... named to the GWC all-Tournament team for his performance against Chicago State, a 5-2 victory, in the first elimination game on Wednesday, May 25. … Business major.

 

John Prestano (Senior, RHP, Morris Plains, NJ) … NJCBA all-State senior award (one of five seniors). ... posted a 1-1 record, 5.46 ERA in 14 games, all in relief, and 29.2 innings. ...he has had 6 scoreless appearances and has held the opposition under 2 runs in 4 other appearances. … Mechanical Engineering major.

 

Men's Basketball

 

Sammy Schickel (Junior, G, Charlotte, NC) … played in every game but one (29). ... season-high 12 pts vs. Marywood (1/8) (5-8 FG; 2-4 3-pt FG). ... 6 rebounds vs. Marywood (1/8) and Longwood (1/18). … Business major.

 

Women's Basketball

 

Jessica Gerald (Senior, G, Woolwich Township, NJ) … All-time women's basketball career scoring leader for NJIT with 1,504 points (missed 13 career games due to injury) ... also holds the program's single-game record for points, with 37 vs. California State University Bakersfield on January 11, 2008. …all-Great West Conference second team. ... Gerald playing through injuries in her senior season, led the team in scoring with 372 points (14.9 ppg) and in free throw percentage (100-124; 81 percent). ... scored in double-figures in 18 contests, including nine 20-point contests. ... became NJIT's top career women's scorer early in the second half of her final game on March 9 vs. North Dakota in the GWC Tournament at Utah Valley. Surpassed Kelly Crowe (1,497 points from 2003 to 2007). … Business major.

 

Maria Sanchez (Sophomore, F, Madrid, Spain) … Played in 22 games, including six starts. ... averaged 3.1 ppg and 3.0 rpg. ... season-high 10 points vs. Delaware State (11/24/10). … Business major.

 

Emily Schartner (Sophomore, G, Finleyville, PA) … played in 26 games (four starts) in her sophomore season. ... averaged 2.8 ppg and 1.8 rpg. ... registered career-high 15 points vs. North Dakota (2/10/11), connecting on five three-pointers. … Science Technology and Society major.

 

Ivana Seric (Senior, F, Split, Croatia) …Started every contest she played but one after joining the Highlanders in January 2008 (during her freshman season, she played in 15 games, with 14 starts and missed two due to injury). ... Finished her career with 101 games played, 100 starts, 648 career points, 560 rebounds, 275 assists, 116 steals and 69 blocks.  ... holds two NJIT Division I school-records – rebounds in a game (15 vs. North Dakota 2/10/11) and blocks in a game (5 vs. Savannah State 2/3/11).  … Seric led the Highlanders in four categories in 2010-11 – rebounds (181, 6.5 rpg), assists (90), steals (37) and blocks (27). ... scored in double-figures five times (season-high 12 points vs. Utah Valley 3/3/11). ... two double-double games (10p, 12r vs. FDU 1/3/11; 10p, 15r vs. North Dakota 2/10/11). …Mathematical Sciences major.

 

Women's Tennis

 

Ana Lidon (Senior, Seville, Spain) … transfer from Lincoln University of Missouri, joined the team in 2008-09.  Lidon finished the season with an 11-4 mark (5-1 at fifth singles; 3-3 at sixth singles). … In doubles competition, Lidon teamed with Graff and finished with a 14-5 record (9-4 at third doubles; 5-0 at second doubles, 0-1 at first doubles). … Business major.

 

Nina Mayevska (Junior, Brooklyn, NY) … transfer from Kingsborough Community College in Brookyln, NY, joined the Highlanders squad in 2009-10.  The 5-foot-8 senior finishes the season with a 10-10 mark (6-9 at second singles; 4-1 at first singles). … Business major.

In all, 251 Great West Conference athletes were named to the team based on a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade point average. The athletes also must have participated in at least 50 percent of their respective team's contests.

 

Using the institutions' most recent GPA, the student-athletes are selected by each member institution's sports information director, with approval from the faculty athletic representative and the head coach.

 

First-year students and JC transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
