NAPERVILLE, Ill.—
Twelve NJIT student-athletes in three sports were named to the Fall 2010 Great West Conference all-Academic team, Director of Media Relations Jacque Cottrell announced Monday.

 

The honorees were: Jonathan Daudelin, Joseph Ju, Brian Mendez (men's cross country); Daisy Gallegos, Megan Higgins, Kayla Howell, Kelsey Johnson, and Ewelina Marut (women's cross country); Amanda Dotten, Meryl Hershfield, Erin Morris, and Christi Taylor (women's soccer).

 

Leading the conference honorees are 14 athletes who have achieved 4.0 grade point averages. Those individuals are Delaware State women's soccer player Michelle Giorgilli, Houston Baptist women's cross country runners Erica Clark and Halcie Pfeiffer and volleyball player Sarah Hazlewood, Howard women's soccer player Jordan Brown, NJIT men's cross country runner Jonathan Daudelin, North Dakota women's cross country runner Lindsay Anderson, women's soccer player Sheri Stapf and volleyball player Ronni Munkeby, South Carolina State women's soccer players Morgan Roesler, Stephanie Searle and Darci Smith, South Dakota men's cross country runner Nick Beare and Southern Utah football player Brad Meyer.

Jonathan Daudelin (men's cross country, sophomore, Hackettstown, NJ)… mechanical engineering major. ... led two robotics teams to the world championships (FLL & FTC) and co-authored four books on LEGO NXT robotics system (including three Amazon.com) robotics bestsellers. …4.00 cumulative GPA.

 

Amanda Dotten (women's soccer, sophomore, Anchorage, AK)… appeared in every match (18), with 17 starts. … scored a team-leading four goals and combined for eight points. … chemical engineering major. … 3.52 cumulative GPA.

 

Daisy Gallegos (women's cross country, senior, Jersey City, NJ) … information technology major; 3.75 cumulative GPA.

 

Meryl Hershfield (women's soccer, sophomore, Vancouver, British Columbia) … appeared in every match (18). … posted three assists. … business major. … 3.63 cumulative GPA.

 

Megan Higgins (women's cross country, junior, Whiting, NJ) … biomedical engineering major. … 3.55 cumulative GPA.

 

Kayla Howell (women's cross country, sophomore, Hamburg, NJ) … industrial engineering major. … 3.31 cumulative GPA.

 

Kelsey Johnson (women's cross country, senior, Point Pleasant, NJ) … civil engineering major. … 3.20 cumulative GPA.

 

Joseph Ju (men's cross country; junior; Scotch Plains, NJ). … biomedical engineering major; 3.87 cumulative GPA.

 

Ewelina Marut (women's cross country, sophomore, Rutherford, NJ). … competed at the ECAC championship race covering the 5k course in 20:06, placing 86th …business major. … 3.79 cumulative GPA.

 

Brian Mendez (men's cross country, sophomore, Kearny, NJ) … finished the 5-mile course at the season-ending 102nd Annual IC4A and 26th ECAC Cross Country Championships placing 16th and became the third NJIT runner to receive “All-East” recognition.  He finished the course in a time of 26:13 which ranks him third on NJIT's all-time list at Van Cortlandt Park. … business major. … 3.23 cumulative GPA.

 

Erin Morris (women's soccer, sophomore, Potomac, MD) … played in 16 matches, with 10 starts. … scored two goals in her sophomore season. … industrial engineering major. .. 3.92 cumulative GPA.

 

Christi Taylor (women's soccer, senior, Hackensack, NJ) … appeared in 16 matches in her final season at NJIT. … scored one goal and added two assists. … history major. … 3.55 cumulative GPA.

 

In all, 180 Great West Conference athletes were named to the team based on a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade point average. The athletes also must have participated in at least 50 percent of their respective team's contests.

 

Using the institutions' most recent GPA, the student-athletes are selected by each member institution's sports information director, with approval from the faculty athletic representative and the head coach.

 

First-year students and JC transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
