NEWARK, NJ – Sophomore Andrew Helbers broke the school-record in the men's 1000 freestlye Monday evening as the Highlanders hosted SUNY Maritime at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
Helbers covered the distance in a school-record (11:04.65). The sophomore stayed consistent throughout much of the race and with about 100 yards, Andrew surged to the finish line nipping the school-record by one second.
The school-record, which was held by Ryan Walton was one of the programs oldest records (2.23.03; 11:05.82).
In addition to Helbers breaking the school-record, NJIT highlighted five season-bests and three lifetime bests.
In the 200 medley relay, which consisted of Richard Montesano, Chris Early, Shawn Bryan and Daniel Carrera set a season-best clocking in at (1:54.55).
Three Highlanders went on to set season-bests in each of their events -- Montessano in the 200 IM (2:19.08); Carrera in the 100 butterfly (1:04.19) and Botero in the 500 freestyle (5:49.85).
Sophomore Matthew Negron recorded a lifetime best in the 200 freestyle with a (2:01.21) mark, good for second place.
NJIT honored its senior's Botero and Carrera during intermission.
The Highlanders will travel to Manhattan on Friday at 6:30pm and will wrap up at home on Tuesday, February 2 when they host Queens (NY) at 6pm before heading to the Metropolitan Swimming Championships hosted by Rutgers (2.19-2.21).
