FARMVILLE, VA -- Three members of the NJIT baseball team have been named to the 2009 NCAA Division I Independent Baseball all-Academic team, coordinator Greg Prouty of Longwood announced.
The honorees were sophomores Steven Ace and James D’Aloia and junior Kyle McCarthy.
Kyle McCarthy, junior first-baseman from Collingswood, NJ, is a mathematical science major with a 4.00 cumulative GPA. McCarthy appeared in 25 games (17 starts) leading the team in putouts with 150. At the plate, he batted .250 with 14 hits and eight RBI.
Steven Ace, sophomore right-handed pitcher from Beach Lake, PA, is an industrial engineering major with a 3.57cumulative GPA. Ace, the big right-hander who moved into the starting rotation after being a middle reliever last season appeared in 12 games (starting nine). He logged 47 innings pitched, nearly four times the total from his freshman season.
James D’Aloia, sophomore outfield from Lakewood, NJ, is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.61 cumulative GPA. D’Aloia, one of NJIT’s best defensive outfielders, appeared in 31 games, starting 25. He got 12 hits.
In order to be eligible for the honor, each school submitted up to three student-athletes with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, at least a sophomore in academic standing, and a starter or key reserve of their respective baseball programs.
Institutions represented on the 39-player team included Chicago State, CSU Bakersfield, Dallas Baptist, Houston Baptist, Le Moyne, Longwood, NJIT, NYIT, NC Central, Northern Colorado, North Dakota, Savannah State, SIU-Edwardsville, UTPA and Utah Valley.
