NEWARK, NJ -- NJIT's track & field team has extended their arms toward helping the homeless, sick children, and even hospitals. However, on January 16, 2009, they felt the urge to lengthen their strides toward helping women specifically.
After 6:30am practice was complete, coach Al Alonso and his track team stepped out into the harsh 16 degree weather to walk to the Goodwill Rescue Mission on University Avenue in Newark.
After a melodious segment by Pastor Veronice Horne, the team was led away from Goodwill-in fact, their assignment was next door--in a place called Veronice's Closet. The closet serves as a shopping center for women in Newark who are down on their luck, and need a decent dressing up for potential employment. “A hand-up for those 'ladies' on their way up the ladder for success!
The SAAC chair of Diversity, Amanda Hefferan, coordinated the women's team in providing in grand donation of clothing. In addition, the team spent hours contributing to cleaning up the area; archiving documents; and making the closet a miraculous site for selecting outfits, personal hygiene items, fragrances, shoes, handbags, and jewelry.
With an entire group of athletic and willing young minds to help make the closet a success, Pastor Horne of “In the hands of a woman Ministries, Inc.” was proud to work with the track team. She's looking forward to future assignments with this group!
