: Five members of the NJIT men’s soccer team have been named to the 2008 Atlantic Soccer Conference all-Academic team the league office announced.

 

Rafael Barrera, a senior from Red Oak, Texas, finishes up his collegiate career as a four-year contributor.  With 54 career games played, he is among the program’s all-time leaders.  This year he has appeared in 11 games.  Barrera, a business major, has a cumulative grade point average of 3.324.

Kevin Blanco, a tri-captain, typically enters the match midway thru the first half and brings noticeable energy to the game.  With 64 career games played, he is among the program’s all-time leaders.  This year, Kevin has played in every game (17), starting four while collecting two goals.  Blanco, a native of North Brunswick, NJ is a business major that holds a 3.258 cumulative grade point average.

 

Erik Magnusson, a junior midfielder from Vejbystrand, Sweden, leads the team this season with four assists, ranking him first all-time with most assists in a season.  A 2007 first-team all-conference honoree, Erik is tied for first with teammate Eddie Romero with three goals.  For the season Magnusson has four assists, three goals for 10 points.  A business major, Erik has a cumulative grade point average of 3.733.

Alex Brito, is in his second season at NJIT after transferring from Montclair State University.  Last year, he appeared in 14 games (nine starts).  This year, playing on the back line, he has played and started every game (17).  Brito, a native of Hillside, NJ, is a biology major that holds a 3.295 cumulative grade point average.

Gustav Warfving, a junior midfielder from Angelholm, Sweden, has played in every game this year (17), with 12 starts.  A 2007 second-team all-conference honoree, Warfving has collected one goal and one assist for three points this season.  A business major, Gustav has a cumulative grade point average of 3.259.

In order to be eligible for the honor, student-athletes needed a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20, have reached at least sophomore athletic standing and be a starter or a significant contributor.

 

Institutions represented on the 13-player team included NJIT, Adelphi and Howard.
