Box Score

NEWARK, NJ - Kubra Tanrikulu, with 10 kills, 20 digs and three service aces, helped NJIT score a 3-1 women's volleyball win over visiting Wagner Friday evening in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

The Highlanders, who cruised to wins in games one and four, split the two middle frames, as Wagner won the second game and battled NJIT in the third. The scores for NJIT were 30-17, 27-30, 30-24, and 30-20.

The win was the eighth of the season for NJIT, which won 10 last year in its first season of NCAA Division I competition. The Highlanders have nine regular season matches plus the season-ending Division I Independent Tournament in which to set a new season wins record at their new level.

Tanrikulu's 10 kills led the Highlanders attack and her 20 digs were second on the team behind Sabrina Baby's 30. Her three service aces were second to teammate Katrina Hornstein's five, as NJIT dominated that part of the game, 14-5.

NJIT also had a wide margin at the net--10 to 3.5 on team blocks. Rebecca Wilkinson had six total blocks (1 solo, 5 assisted) and Agnieszka Pregowska had four (2 solo, 2 assisted).

Tanrikulu had 10 kills, 2 errors and 29 attempts for a team-high .276 attack percentage. Erica Schultz collected 19 assists to lead NJIT, followed by Ashley Craig (9) and Danielle Thompson (8).

Wagner's Alex Klein and Sarah Garrette shared match honors with 13 kills apiece and Garrette's .357 attack percentage (13 kills, 3 errors, 28 attempts) was the best in the match.

Gabi Hilk had 35 assists and Jennifer Lechman led Wagner's floor defense with 26 digs.

NJIT rolled to a 30-17 win in the first round, led by Wilkinson's five kills in six attempts and a 9-1 advantage in service aces.

Wagner came back from a 25-22 deficit to win the second game, 30-27, and the Seahawks fought NJIT in the third frame before falling, 30-24.

Pregowska's four kills without an error in seven attempts led the attack and Tanrikulu had all three of her aces as the Highlanders took game four, 30-20.

NJIT will be back in home action after a short turnaround, hosting Saint Francis (PA) in a 2 pm match in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
