NJIT Sweeps College Sports Madness Awards

Head Coach Jim Engles and Guards Chris Flores and Ky Howard Sweep Honors; Flores and Ryan Woods Named First-Team

Senior F Ryan Woods joined Flores as a GWC First-Team Selection by College Sports Madness on Tuesday.

NEWARK, N.J. -- NJIT Highlanders swept the major 2012-13 Great West Conference Honors as selected by College Sports Madness on Tuesday. Head Coach Jim Engles was selected as CSM's Coach of the Year, senior G Chris Flores was named CSM's Player of the Year and freshman G Ky Howard was honored as Freshman of the Year.

Engles and Flores had both been selected to win their respective award when CSM put out its preseason predictions. Neither disappointed, as Engles guided the Highlanders to a program-best 16 wins and a GWC regular-season championship and Flores led the conference in both scoring (17.2  ppg) and steals (2.4 spg).

Engles was also named as one of 20 national finalists for the 2013 Skip Prosser Man of the Year award, which is presented by the outlet's website CollegeInsider.com.

Additionally, Flores was joined by senior F Ryan Woods on CSM's All-GWC First-Team. The co-captain finished fifth in the GWC in scoring (14.3 ppg) and eighth in rebounding (4.9) while leading the circuit with 3.0 three-pointers made per contest.


The First- and Second-Team selections appear below.

First Team:
G Chris Flores (NJIT), G Brandon Provost (Texas-Pan American), F Ryan Woods (NJIT), F Art Bernardi (Houston Baptist), and F/C Ben Aird (Utah Valley).

Second Team: G Holton Hunsaker (Utah Valley), G Aaron Urbanus (Texas-Pan American), G/F Quinton Pippen (Chicago State), F Matt Ross (Chicago State), and F Nick Thompson (Utah Valley).
