NAPERVILLE, Ill. – NJIT captain Sabrina Baby has been named Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Week the conference office announced Tuesday.

Utah Valley’s Camie Manwill earned Player of the Week honors.

Baby, a senior from Florianopolis, Brazil, led the Highlanders to a 4-0 record last week helping NJIT extend their winning streak to seven matches. The program moved up to face Division I competition beginning in the 2006 season.

She produced double digits in all four matches, shattering her own school Division I record for digs in a four-set match, getting 41 against the visiting Fairleigh Dickinson on September 2. She held the old mark with 32 in four sets vs. Harvard in 2007 and her effort against Fairleigh Dickinson came up just one short of her own record of 42, which she did in five sets against Sacred Heart in 2007.

At the Central Connecticut Blue Devil Invitational, Baby was named to the all-tournament team.  She combined for 67 digs and two service aces as the Highlanders went 3-0 in the tournament.

For the week, she tallied 108 digs in just 13 sets played.

Baby and the Highlanders will return to action today, when they host Sacred Heart at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.  The match is scheduled to start at 4pm.
